California Here We Come

California Here We Come, All the Way from Covington 1937

In 1937, our father, Charles Zimmer was elected as President of the Kentucky Hardware Association. That year, the Annual Convention of the Association was in July in Los Angeles and my father received $200 to go to the convention. We had a ’34 Nash car, he rented a 2-wheel trailer and all 8 of us in the family (Mom, Dad, Gram and the 5 of us children) went to LA. I was 5 years old and we all rode in the car all the way. Our resemblance to a refugee family from Oklahoma was often noted and our welcome on the way was minimal. These stories are from what I remember of the trip but mostly what I have been told after the trip about what happened.
